You don’t know squat about scat…until you read this!

It starts with a S and ends with a T, it comes out of you and it comes out of me. It’s scat of course!

Scat is just a fancy smancy word for animal poop. And who doesn’t like to learn about poop? Well, let me give you the scoop! All animals poop or create scat, everything from Leopard frogs all the way up to the Mountain Lion. Of course Leopard frog scat is a lot different looking than a Mountain Lion, but it still is bascially the same thing.

Researchers and biologists can learn a lot about an animal by looking at its scat. We can figure out what kind of animal it is by looking at the shape of the scat. Sometimes you might find lots of small little pellets poops, what kind of animal do you think that is from? Yup, you’re right! It’s going to be from a White-Tailed Deer. Biologists can also determine what the animal is eating. When you find Mountain Lion scat it will be very large and almost look like dog poop. But, if you look closely you may see some bones and even some fur. That’s because Mountain Lions love to eat deer. But, not everything is able to be digested inside the animal’s stomach, mostly the bones, and fur. So that is what you are going to see left over in the scat.

Interested in becoming a scatologist?? (That’s someone who studies scat or animal poop) Well, if you want to be one, but do it in a fun way, try EDIBLE SCAT!! Yeah, I said it, animal scat that you can eat! Wanna learn how? Follow the directions below…

Take some tootsie rolls, and mold them into a piece of scat. It can be long and skinny or short and chunky, you decide. Then I want you to start adding things. Think of your favorite animal and what that animal might like to eat. Let’s do a River Otter for an example. River Otters like to eat fish and crustaceans. So, you would need some fish scales (fruity pebbles cereal, or sprinkles) and some crustacean parts (shredded wheat cereal with red food coloring). Sprinkle as much of these items on your tootsie rolls as you want. Then when it looks nice and real, go ahead and take a bite out of your scat!

There are many other combinations of things to use in your scat as well, such as shredded wheat cereal for fur, raisins or cranberries for berries, shredded wheat cereal for plant material, lifesaver mints for bones, and many other things…you just have to be creative!

What is the ‘scat’ at top of this page? Wondering. Looks like dog or perhaps raccoon. Trying to determine if occasional scat in same place at top of stairs came from one or another for a friend. Raccoon scat is scary and unhealthy for kids even though raccoons are cute. Deadly roundworms which kill or incapacitate prey for raccoons.
